Article 1

1.    Cyperus esculentus (tiger nut) oil is authorised to be placed on the market within the Union.

Cyperus esculentus (tiger nut) oil shall be included in the Union list of novel foods set out in Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470.

2.   The Annex to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470 is amended in accordance with the Annex to this Regulation.

Article 2

This Regulation shall enter into force on the twentieth day following that of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The Annex to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470 is amended as follows:

in Table 1 (Authorised novel foods), the following entry is inserted:

The designation of the novel food on the labelling of the foodstuffs containing it shall be “ Cyperus esculentus (tiger nut) oil”.

Cyperus esculentus (tiger nut) oil

Description:

The novel food is obtained from a pasteurisation of Cyperus esculentus (tiger nut) L. tuber followed by a cold-pressing process.

Fatty acid composition:

Palmitic acid: 12-15 %

Stearic acid: 5-8 %

Oleic acid: 65-69 %

Linoleic acid: 9-12 %

Characteristics:

Acidity: ≤ 2 %

Peroxide value: ≤ 20 meq/kg

Saponification value: ≤ 189 mg KOH/g

p -anisidine: < 1

Heavy metals:

Lead: ≤ 0,1 mg/kg

Cadmium: ≤ 0,1 mg/kg

Mycotoxins:

Aflatoxins (sum of B1, B2, G1, G2): < 4 μg/kg

Aflatoxin B1: < 1 μg/kg

Ochratoxin A: < 3 μg/kg

Microbiological criteria:

Total Aerobic Microbial Count: ≤ 10 3 CFU /g

Total Yeast and Mould Count: ≤ 10 2 CFU /g

Coliforms: ≤ 10 CFU /g

Salmonella : Not detected in 25g

Listeria monocytogenes : Not detected in 25g

Enterobacteriaceae: < 10 2 CFU /g

CFU: colony forming units’
