Prohibition of Female Circumcision Act 1985 s 1

s 1 Prohibition of female circumcision.

(1) Subject to section 2 below, it shall be an offence for any person— (a) to excise, infibulate or otherwise mutilate the whole or any part of the labia majora or labia minora or clitoris of another person; or (b) to aid, abet, counsel or procure the performance by another person of any of those acts on that other person’s own body. (2) A person guilty of an offence under this section shall be liable— (a) on conviction on indictment, to a fine or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or to both; or (b) on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum . . . or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or to both.
