SEC. 54. Redemption of real estate.—Within one year from and after the date of the sale, the delinquent taxpayer, or any other person in his behalf, shall have the right to redeem the property sold by paying to the city treasurer the amount of the public taxes, penalties, and costs together with interest on the purchase price at the rate of fifteen per centum, per annum from the date of purchase to the date of the redemption; and such payment shall invalidate the certificate of sale issued to the purchaser, and shall entitle the person making such payment to a certificate to be issued by the city treasurer, stating that he has thus redeemed the property, and the city treasurer, upon the return by the purchaser of the certificate of sale previously issued to him, shall forthwith pay over to the purchaser the amount by which such real estate has thus been redeemed and the same shall thereafter be free from the lien of such taxes and penalties.
