The Foreign Sea-Fishery Officers Order 1976

Section 1 Citation and commencement

This order may be cited as the Foreign Sea-Fishery Officers Order 1976 and shall come into operation on 22nd July 1976.

Section 2 Interpretation

(1) In this order:—

“ the Act ” means the Sea Fisheries Act 1968;

“ the baselines ” means the lines drawn round the coast of Iceland so as to join successively, in the order in which they are there set out, the points identified by the co-ordinates of latitude and longitude in Schedule 1 to this order;

“ the Convention ” means the Agreement between Her Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom and the government of Iceland signed at Oslo on 1st June 1976 .

“ the Convention area ” means the area to which the Convention applies being the area described in Schedule 2 to this order;

“ mile ” means nautical mile;

“ the 12 mile line ” means a line drawn round the coast of Iceland 12 miles from the baselines and extended seawards by lines drawn 12 miles from and around the Island of Grimsey (from its outermost headlands and skerries), and around Hvalbakur (64° 35.8&min; north latitude 13° 16.6&min; west longitude).

“ the 200 mile line ” means a line drawn round the coast of Iceland 200 miles from the baselines and extended seawards by lines drawn 200 miles around Hvalbakur (64° 35.8&min; north latitude 13° 16.6&min; west longitude) and around Kolbeinsey (67° 08.8&min; north latitude 18° 40.6&min; west longitude).

“ the United Kingdom baselines ” means the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea surrounding the United Kingdom is measured.

(2) The Interpretation Act 1889 shall apply for the interpretation of this order as it applies for the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.

Section 3 Foreign Sea-Fishery Officers

In relation to the Convention there are hereby specified as foreign sea-fishery officers, entitled to exercise in relation to British fishing boats anywhere within the Convention area the powers referred to in section 9 of the Act, persons duly appointed by the government of Iceland as inspectors to enforce the provisions of the Convention.
