These Regulations may be cited as the Motor Cycles (Eye Protectors) (Amendment) Regulations 1988 and shall come into force on 11th July 1988.

The Motor Cycles (Eye Protectors) (Amendment) Regulations 1988
For regulation 3 of the Motor Cycles (Eye Protectors) Regulations 1985 there shall be substituted the following regulation—
(3) The types of eye protector hereby prescribed as authorised for use by persons driving or riding (otherwise than in a sidecar) on a motor bicycle are—
(a) those which conform to either—
(i) the requirements relating to Grade X in British Standard BS 4110: 1979, or
(ii) the requirements relating to Grades XA, YA or ZA in British Standard BS 4110: 1979 as amended by Amendment No. 1 (AMD 3368), Amendment No. 2 (AMD 4060) and Amendment No. 3 (AMD 4630),
and in either case are marked with the number of the said British Standard, the Grade and the certification mark of the British Standards Institution (whether or not they are required to be so marked by the said British Standard); and
(b) until 1st April 1989, those which fulfil both of the following requirements, that is to say—
(i) they are fitted with lenses that are designed to correct a defect in sight and that do not fly into fragments if fractured, and
(ii) they transmit 50 per cent or more of the light with those lenses fitted; and
(c) on or after 1st April 1989, those which were first used before that date and fulfill the two requirements mentioned in sub-paragraph (b) above.
