The A428 Trunk Road (Bedford Southern Bypass) Order 1991

Section 1

The new highways which the Secretary of State proposes to construct–

(a) along the route described in Schedule 1 to this Order (in this Order referred to as “the main new trunk road”); and

(b) along the routes described in Schedule 2 to this Order to connect the main new trunk road with other highways at the places stated in that schedule (in this Order referred to as “the slip roads”),

shall become trunk roads as from the date when this Order comes into force.

Section 2

The centre line of each of the new trunk roads is indicated by a heavy black line on the plan.

Section 3

The Secretary of State directs as respects any part of a highway which crosses the route of a new trunk road that–

(a) where a highway is a highway maintainable at the public expense by a local highway authority, the part in question shall be maintained by that authority; and

(b) where a highway is not a highway so maintainable and is not maintainable under a special enactment or by reason of tenure, enclosure or prescription, the Secretary of State shall be under no duty to maintain the part in question,

until, in either case, a date to be specified in a notice given by the Secretary of State to the highway authority for that highway. The date specified will not be later than the date on which the relevant route is opened for the purpose of through traffic.

Section 4

In this Order–

(a) all measurements of distance are measured along the route of the relevant highway;

(b)

(i) “the plan” means the plan numbered HA10/2E/308 marked “The A428 Trunk Road (Bedford Southern Bypass) Order 1991”, signed by authority of the Secretary of State and deposited at the Department of Transport, Romney House, 43 Marsham Street, LondonSW1P 3PY;

(ii) “the new trunk roads”means the highways mentioned in article 1 of this Order and “a new trunk road” means one of those highways;

(iii) “the trunk road”means the Northampton–St Neots Trunk Road (A428).

Section 5

This Order shall come into force on 12th December 1991 and may be cited as the A428 Trunk Road (Bedford Southern Bypass) Order 1991.

Section 1 Junction with the A6 Elstow Bypass

(a) A route forming a roundabout 372 metres in length, the centre of which is a point about765 metres south of the junction of the A6 Elstow Bypass with the A421 Kempston Southern Relief Road. This slip road is given the reference number 1 on the deposited plan.

(b) Four routes to connect the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the main new trunk road with that roundabout. These slip roads are given, respectively, the reference numbers 2, 3, 4 and 5 on the deposited plan.

Section 2 Junction with the A600 High Road

A route from the eastbound carriageway of the main new trunk road to the A600 High Road (as proposed to be improved by the Secretary of State) and a route from that road to the westbound carriageway of the main new trunk road. These slip roads are given, respectively, the reference numbers 6 and 7 on the deposited plan.

Section 3 Junction with the A603 Cardington Road

A route to connect the eastbound carriageway of the main new trunk road with the A603 Cardington Road by means of a roundabout (as proposed to be constructed by the Secretary of State) and a route to connect that roundabout with the westbound carriageway of the main new trunk road. These slip roads are given, respectively, the reference numbers 8 and 10 on the deposited plan.
