Section 1Citation and commencement

These Regulations may be cited as the Special Constables (Amendment) Regulations 1992 and shall come into force on 1st August 1992.

Section 2Bounty payments

The Special Constables Regulations 1965 are amended—

(a) by inserting after regulation 5—

Bounty payments

(5A)

(1) A police authority may, with the approval of the Secretary of State, undertake to make bounty payments in accordance with Schedule 2 to special constables appointed for their area.

(2) An approval given for the purposes of this regulation may be withdrawn with effect from 1st October in any year.

(3) The withdrawal of an approval does not affect rights acquired and obligations incurred, whether prospectively or otherwise, in respect of any period before the date from which the withdrawal takes effect.

(b) by inserting after the Schedule—

BOUNTY PAYMENTS

(1) For the purposes of this Schedule—

(a) the relevant periods are consecutive periods of 6 months, the first beginning with 1st October 1991, and

(b) working hours are hours spent on duty or undergoing training.

(2) A bounty payment shall be made to a special constable who is eligible to receive it if, but only if, he has applied for it to be made.

(3)

(1) A special constable is eligible to receive a bounty payment of £200 in respect of any relevant period in which his working hours were 125 or more.

(2) If—

(a) a special constable’s working hours in two consecutive relevant periods of which the first began with 1st October in any year totalled 250 or more, and

(b) he has become eligible under sub-paragraph (1) to receive a bounty payment in respect of one of the periods only,

he is eligible to receive a bounty payment of the appropriate amount.

(3) The appropriate amount is—

(a) if he has not applied for the bounty payment mentioned in sub-paragraph (2)(b) to be made, £400, and

(b) in any other case, £200.

(4) A special constable who has become eligible under sub-paragraphs (2) and (3)(a) to receive a bounty payment of £400 and has applied for it to be made ceases to be eligible to receive the bounty payment mentioned in sub-paragraph (2)(b).
