We should take into serious consideration some forms of air filtration system in most
libraries for both preservation and maintenance. There is a considerable variety of types of
filters available, and the most common include air cyclone, electrostatic apparatus,
alkaline water sprays, and activated carbon. Electrostatic filtering is not recommended
because electrostatic filters add the pollutant ozone to the air as they filter particulate
matter. Dry filters instead are recommended. In specifying a level of filtering efficiency, it
should be noted that the more complete the filtering process, the higher the cost because it
requires larger fan systems to pull the air through the filters and thus consumes more
energy. The more efficient filter will require more frequent servicing or replacement, as
the particulate matters will accumulate more rapidly on the filters.
